El Pope is a clean, welcoming family restaurant in Richmond, VA. We carry high chairs for babies and do everything we can to make sure families feel safe and have a great time. Bring everyone to enjoy some Salvadoran food!
Our bar-restaurant is the perfect place to spend an evening, with affordable mixed drinks and shots all day, every day. Pair your tacos with incredible refreshments, and happy hour will never be more fun!
Coming from Chicago, my girlfriend and I were craving some popusas. They were made very good! But I do have to say their Caldo De Res is by far one of the better ones I have tried. Definitely would come again.
You can tell they use high-quality, fresh ingredients because their food is superb. Everything is so reasonably priced. Great value and delicious flavor!
Our first time here .... 'cause, yes, there are plenty of other Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Latin / Central American restaurants on Cary Street and Main Street in The Fan - so it took us a while to try El Pope. What a pleasant surprise!!! From the outside, it is a very unassuming place. Once inside, the friendly staff, cleanliness, and Latin music quietly playing in the background just made us know we would enjoy our lunch. The food, most importantly, did not disappoint. I tried three different street tacos - adobo chicken, pork al pastor, and carnitas - to get a sampling of their cooking. They were all excellent.
We will be back, soon.

Great little Salvadorian place.
Excellent service. Friendly atmosphere.
The food is reasonably priced. And the waiter is hilarious!
Moved to rva circa 1.5 years ago. Needed a place that reminded me of my mother's cooking.
El pope is the best! The pupusas are my favorite. It is delicious and not overpriced food. They also serve breakfast.
Delicious food for a great price
Love it!
I ate soo much and everything was soo good.
Everything from the food, to the drinks, to the service was great. The prices are very reasonable as well. Deff will continue coming here!!
High expectations that did not disappoint! The egg rolls were amazing and the pupusa's were great. I recommend getting the regular ones. 1 guy serving all the tables and the bar but still did a good job.
Great. Service. Very attentive friendly . Chips are free .very good atmosphere
Very busy. Burritos are very tasty get the burrito
The pupusas. Have very good taste but. Its more like fried cheese very delicious very small. Way small pupusas again. They delicious. You will. Need about 8 pupusas to feed an adult.
Lets work on them pupusas the size. Make them bigger to justify. $2.75 per. In the mean. Time. Visit. Tako Tako. They are making. Very authentic pupusas .
Great food. Takes a little while to come out but you understand why when you get it. Love this place!
The best pupusas north of the James! Ive visited El Pope a few times with friends and its quickly become my favorite restaurant in Richmond.
You cant go wrong with the bean and cheese pupusas, and the fried yucca comes with a yummy dipping sauce. Make sure you try the house-made hot sauces they really are very hot.
$5 happy hour cocktails seal the deal. Id recommend the margaritas!
And shout out to the efficient and friendly wait staff. If youre friendly to them, theyll remember you every time you come back!
The Chimichangas are amazing. This changed my opinion that good Mexican food can be had north of the river.
Good drinks at fantastically low prices, nice service, tasty food -- but the saltiest meal I can remember in a long time! Way too much salt on the chips and the chicken burrito. I don't know if this was a one-time experience or if this their enduring idea of how to season foods.
El Pope never disappoints! The serotonin rush I get from their pupusas is no joke. The customer service is amazing as well. Friday night is pupusa night for my family and El Pope is the only place were getting them!
Food was fantastic. Service was perfect. Atmosphere was laid back. Will definitely be back.
Food was very good. Went there on a whim based on Google's reviews and it was a pleasant surprise.
Would recommend in a heartbeat.
Only -ve was the wait time for the food to arrive, took about 40minutes..
Place has a small cozy atmosphere.
This is the restaurant that took me by surprise after a long time, cheaper compared to other dine in restaurants, a must try.
The best. Ive brought practically everyone I know to this delicious spot! Affordable and filling. I hope you all contemplate adding nondairy/vegan items!
One of my favorite places in richmond, the best papusas and margaritas for the best prices. Great place to go with groups and the staff is super nice and helpful. You cant go wrong with a single item on the menu and the coleslaw and sauce that comes with is the perfect touch so yummy!
After a long night of clubbing, nothing beats the 6 dollar brunch dishes at El Pope on a Sunday. Very peppy staff, not to mention drinks galore. Get the buenos noches if you want a good time
great service at affordable prices
I had papusas, they were amazing. There was only one person working service when I was there but he was doing an amazing job. The food was very good value.
I have always been curious about pupusas and was happy they have several vegetarian options. Tasty. My partner loved her burrito. The peach jalapeno marg was delicious and $5. The hot sauce will light up your nose hairs. I only wish the guy who waited on us was wearing a mask.

Lots of chips and salsa to start you off. The food is amazing, and they give you big portions. Youve gotta try the pupusas! The only negative I can think of is that the benches are hard and uncomfortable.
Delicious food, big portions. Come when you are starving, cause you’ll definitely leave this place with a full belly!
Regular menu is limited but good. Their brunch food is very cheap and delicious.
Great food for very fair price!

Excelente lugar para disfrutar en familia y amigos
Everything was great, tacos, pupusas, salsa. Would be perfect if there was some outdoor seating
Love the food, service and authenticity of the flavors. We've been here twice when coming into town and plan on returning. They have made adjustments for me d/t food allergies. My family really enjoys the food and service here! Please give them a try.
Boy was this place good, and the prices are unbeatable. The pupusas were tasty and well sized. My friend got a quesadilla as well that was enormous, very well made, and even came with French fries. Very small spot too, which gives it an intimate feeling. Highly recommend for a casual dinner.
Everything was delicious, great prices, and made in house. Best pupusas in Richmond!
Really great food and drink prices and very friendly atmosphere!
ABSOLUTELY INSANELY LEGIT AND DELISH . TITO SHOTS TOO??? YES PLEASE
Food is amazing. Large portions too. And its so cheap! Only thing I can complain about is the inside of the restaurant. It smelled like the place is old and dusty, and the tables/chairs were old and uncomfortable.
Very delicious food and friendly atmosphere. Just one FOH member and one BOH so service is a bit on the slow side. Took a longer lunch break but thats just fine. Carnitas, chicken adobo, regular pupusa, and El Pope rolls. All were very tasty. I especially enjoyed the rolls. Super surprising taste and flavor combination. I cant wait to take my friends.
Excellent quality and friendly staff. Food is authentic and menu has something for everyone.
Wish I had come here sooner, amazing food and the waiter Adrian was hilarious and great. Coming back very soon
Consistently delicious. Best pupusas in town. Love the burritos and brunch. Excellent prices. A hidden gem.
If this place was looking for investors, I'd be the first in line. First time today. Everything was amazing!
First time Salvadorean food - an awesome find on Main street.. Saturday lunch on a surprise discovery charmed our whole family. Egg rolls and gorditas as appetizers. Pupusas, tacos and torta as entrees. Chips and dip tantalizing to the spread that followed. Been a long time since we had fried appetizers. Boy loved the egg roll with sauce. Spicy sauce great. Wife liked the gorditas with chicken. Stacked with beans, chicken they are good. Pupusas killer food of the day. Beans, shrimp, tilapia, potato - we got these 4 flavors. Subtly loaded with cheese, the pupusa sauce was just like tomato chutney. Teen girl finished the adobe chicken and shrimp tacos by herself. 2 halves of chicken tortas pretty full as a single meal. Single server managed to take care of us well. Very affordable for our family of 4 - well under $50 before tip. Heartily recommended by everyone of us. Small narrow tables a bit of a bother as we spilt water trying to get up.
Amazing food at a good price
Great as advertised.
Very Affordable Latin cuisine. The atmosphere is pleasant, seating is comfortable. I did not try any alcoholic beverages but it looks like they could make some fun drinks. The food tasted good for the price but was not as original as expected. The quantity of food if more than expected given the fairly cheap price.
Cozy space, accommodating service, and most importantly, incredible pupusas. My wife and I's new regular date night spot! Plus, it's very affordable which is always nice.
If you are not a fan of cultural appropriation or hipster restaurants. I would highly recommend to eat here. The food is absolutely delicious!!!!
Best papusas in town. Wish they had loroco. Energetic service, solid burritos and dessert as well. Especially that tres leches.

El Pastor tacos!!
Delicious food at some really good prices. My wife and I ate our fill for under $20 including tax
Amazing delicious Sal Vadorian tacos and puposas!
Quality of the pupusas are on point. The prices are decent. Service was a bit lacking but to be fair there was only one guy serving the floor on a Friday night. Tres leches was different, didnt have that melt in your mouth sensation. I look forward to coming back.
the food is beyond amazing
Good pupusas
Fantastic food
Great Salvadorian food
Enjoyed some STELLAR Papusas here. Everything was beyond expectations. The complimentary chips and salsa were out of this world as well! Adrian took our order and packed it togo with care, he was very concerned with the quality of our meal and enjoyment. Looking forward to returning for some delicious papusas!!!
Best Salvadorian food North of El Salvador
Service and food is among the best in town. Sopapilla and gorditas are a must try.
I've never had a bad experience here. Everything is delicious.
The pupusas were hot, savory and very authentic. The food was well presented and flavorful. The prices are manageable. They don't have tamales but their pupusas made up for it.
Family owned treasure
Best papusas I've had in richmond. The al pastor is crazy good. Worth a try!
The food is delicious and inexpensive. Nice atmosphere. Great pupusas and tacos.
Super great food and people!
Great food and amazing hospitality
I went to this place on a whim and can't wait to go back. The staff were friendly and the authentic salvadorian food was fantastic. I recommend the Pupusas and the soup.
I eat here every week and they never disappoint.
I have been here for lunch and loved it. I would like to come back for dinner where I can linger and enjoy it more. Excellent so far.
My covid safe street taco spot!! Love el Pope!!! Thank you for being here!!
Nice place!! They practice social distancing & the service is great. I had the pork pupusa & the Sopapilla. Delicious sauces made in house!
Delicious! The waiter Adrian was phenomenal! Small cute place with great homemade food. Pupusas were great. The sauces are house made and the salsa was so good. Really fair prices too.
Really great and very reasonably priced Salvadoran food. They are doing takeout
SO SO GOOD. Staff is amazing and the papusas are delicious!
Burrito Grande is DELICIOUS!! Also best Beef Soup I have ever tasted! Great service as well.
Love this little neighborhood spot. Fajitas and pupusas are my go to.
Absolutely delicious!
great food
Great tasting pupusas revueltas. Just as good as I can find in Miami. And the torta was delicious. Must try.
El Pope is one of the best places in the city. The people there are always super nice, the drink specials are on point, and their pupusas are amazing (and very inexpensive).
What a great spot! The food and drinks were delicious. I had my order ready, but at the recommendation of our amazing waiter Adrian I completely changed my mind and tried papusa and a variety of tacos. I am so glad I did.....everything was amazing. Stop in and see Adrian and he will take the best care of you!! We will be back again and again.
Any review less than 5 stars of this place is wrong, crooked, and deceptive
Fantastic as always..papusas are consistently great
Food & service is amazing!!! Love this place. Its my new favorite spot for dinner & brunch. 11 out of 10!
Amazing.
Excellent food!!!
Solid service, great prices, wonderful pupusas and tacos! Pupusas - bean and cheese was sooo good, and potato n cheese was wonderful! The taco Al Pastor had plenty of meat, tender and tasty! The sauces were good, the sauce with the pupusas surprised me!
(I give 5 stars rarely, for an excellent experience in a Hard rush or if I see something highly exceptional, like turning around a customer interaction that went wrong, or some charitable thing.)
All the food is incredible here. I always go for some combo of two pupusas (they seem small, but are strangely filling) and am never let down.
There's one waiter, too, who's always a hoot -- if he's served you before, you more than likely know who he is.
Always a great time here~ definitely my go-to spot next to Bocata when I have a hankering for some Latin American cuisine :)

100% recomendado deliciosas pupusas vale la pena pagar...
Amazing and authentic El Salvadorian food! I highly recommend
El Pope to anyone!
When my group first walked in everyone asked me What did you get us into?? because the restaurant was empty other than the server sitting down. Perhaps cause it was 1pm and the restaurant had opened only 2 hours ago? During my stay, two people walked in for pick-up orders, but no other customers ate inside. Beforehand I had read the google reviews and trusted that this would be a good place. The reviews are honest! This Salvadoran restaurant serves delicious, fresh and hot food, with good prices and large portions. We received chips and salsa as an appetizer, and they gave us seconds! The only thing I can critique on is the service. My table did not receive any napkins or straws. Also, when the chef walked out of the kitchen he did not have a mask on unfortunately. For dessert they have tres leches and fried ice cream, but I chose to go to Shyndigz instead! I highly recommend El Pope to all of you reading!
Delicious
The quality of the food is amazing! Plus you add the presentation and do not miss the Arbor hot sauce!
Great tacos, good chips, good salads. Pupusas are the amazing too
The mood was relaxed, the food was bangin', and most of all Ruby Joy really made our time special! Thanks so much for having us.
Adrian was a great server but this place food was great salsa is amazing!! Price is the best in town!! Drinks are great and price efficient!! Will be coming again!! Come here with your family and friends!!
We absolutely loved it - so cozy and intimate, incredible service, and the food was absolutely AMAZING. Incredibly affordable, and the waitress offered us free drinks for the long wait. We will absolutely be back - this might be our new favorite lil nook.
Delicious food. A lot for what you pay. Excellent service.
Food is absolutely delicious and the server, Ruby, was an absolute gem! Best chicken tacos I've had in while, not dry at all and very tasty. Loved the el pope rolls and the drinks were fantastic. They handmade their tortillas which is so hard to find. Will be back over and over - so glad we found this hidden gem!
Unbelievable place to eat. I stopped here on my way through town and it absolutely blew me away. Food was unreal, cocktails great, and the food! Must try and shoutout to Ruby for amazing service
Salsa was amazing. Friendly service and very tasty food.
Great Burritos and Pupusas!!
I picked up brunch today; delicious! I had the shrimp and cheese, and bean and cheese pupusas. They are thick, yummy griddle cakes. The service was excellent; friendly and prompt. I will be sure to return soon.
Michael Quinteros
The food is delicious and inexpensive. Nice atmosphere. Great pupusas and tacos.
Vanessa Hernandez
The pupusas were hot, savory and very authentic. The food was well presented and flavorful. The prices are manageable. They don't have tamales but their pupusas made up for it.
Ben Johnson
I've never had a bad experience here. Everything is delicious.
Awesome choice. The service was great but the food was better. 10/10.
They went out of there way and included the most delicious soup EVER with my burrito I purchased in a carry-out order.
So refreshing to get such good service along with an amazing meal.
